Downy Woodpecker
  Picoides pubescens

* Male has red in crown.

* Widespread in most of North America. Inhabits woodlands, especially riparian areas. Also inhabits urban areas and parks.

* Feeds on insects, fruit, sap, nuts in winter (e.g., pecans).

* Feeds on insects in stems of weeds and galls.

* Similar in appearance to the Hairy Woodpecker. The Downy is smaller and has a noticeably shorter beak.
