Rock Squirrel
 

Spermophilus variegatus

* Often heard before seen. Call is an emphatic chirp or series of chirps, easily mistaken for a bird.

* Can climb trees very well but prefers rocky habitats as its name implies.

* Rock squirrel burrows are found under rocks, trees, or shrubs. Commonly seen and heard in Corner Canyon and on the dry foothills.

* Diet consists of seeds, nuts, berries, vegetation, invertebrates, and even meat when available.
