Douglas Hawthorn (Black Hawthorn)
  Crataegus douglasii

* Related to apples and roses.

* The dark red to black berries were eaten by native Americans. It is an important food for wintering birds. Fruit is variable in sweetness and palatability, some being very soft and juicy, others dry and pulpy. Fruit often dries into "raisins."

* Tree has stout thorns.                                           
* Grows along waterways.
